system, equatorial vertical ion drifts, and the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA). Due to its importance, there is much interest in accurately measuring the EEF. However, there is a severe lack of high quality data with the notable exception being the JULIA coherent scatter radar in Peru. In this work, we use CHAMP satellite-derived latitudinal current profiles of the day-time EEJ in order to estimate the eastward electric field at all longitudes, seasons, and day-side local times. We have constructed a dataset of over 32,000 EEF estimates based on six years of CHAMP data. Our estimates agree well with JULIA measurements, with an RMS difference of 0.13mV/m. & 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Electric fields and zonal winds in the equatorial ionosphere inferred from CHAMP satellite magnetic measurements
[1] The Equatorial Electrojet (EEJ) produces a strong magnetic signal in measurements of the low-orbiting CHAMP satellite. Six years of data with more than 30,000 dayside equator crossings provide a unique data basis to study this current system. In addition to scalar measurements used in previous studies, we have also inverted vector magnetic field measurements to gain accurate meridional prof...
متن کاملImproved horizontal wind model HWM07 enables estimation of equatorial ionospheric electric fields from satellite magnetic measurements
[1] Horizontal neutral winds play an important role in lowlatitude ionospheric E and F-region dynamics. In particular, the zonal winds have strong effects on the local structure of the low-latitude ionospheric current system. Accurate wind specification is therefore essential for modeling these currents. In order to investigate the retrieval of eastward electric fields from satellite-derived eq...
متن کاملElectric fields in the equatorial ionosphere derived from individual CHAMP satellite orbits
The day-time eastward equatorial electric field (EEF) in the E-region plays an important role in equatorial ionospheric dynamics. It is responsible for driving the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) current system, equatorial vertical ion drifts, and the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA). Due to its importance, there is much interest in accurately measuring the EEF. However, there is a severe lack o...
متن کاملA gravity-driven electric current in the Earth’s ionosphere identified in CHAMP satellite magnetic measurements
[1] A gravity field acting on a collisionless, magnetized space plasma causes electrons and ions to drift into opposite directions, in addition to gyrating around the magnetic field lines. This sets up an electric current which flows perpendicular to the gravity and magnetic fields in the eastward direction. Here we present the first observational evidence for such a gravity-driven current syst...
متن کاملEvidence for short spatial correlation lengths of the noontime equatorial electrojet inferred from a comparison of satellite and ground magnetic data
[1] The current density of the noontime equatorial electrojet (EEJ) as determined from CHAMP data is highly variable between successive passes of the satellite, which are separated by 23 in distance and 93 min in time. An open question is to which extent this variability is caused by temporal or spatial variations in the ionosphere. Another important question is the connection between EEJ and g...
